Originally published as a 5-part serial in Argosy All-Story Weekly, October 21 and 28 and November, 4, 11, and 18, 1922, this classic science fiction novel begins The first of the new meteors landed on the earth in November, 1940. It was discovered by a farmer in his field near Brookline, Massachusetts, shortly after daybreak on the morning of the 11th. Astronomically, the event was recorded by the observatory at Harvard as the sudden appearance of what apparently was a new star, increasing in the short space of a few hours from invisibility to a power beyond that of the first magnitude, and then as rapidly fading again to invisibility. This star was recorded by two of the other great North American observatories, and by one in the Argentine Republic. That it was comparatively small in mass and exceedingly close to the earth, even when first discovered, was obvious. All observers agreed that it was a heavenly body of an entirely new order....

The Fire People Classic Science Fiction from the Pulps Ray Cummings 9781434409515 Books Reviews
The Fire People is what most would describe as science fantasy. We are transported to a vividly developed planet with different races and civilizations. This 1920 story is a prequel to the Tama of the Light Country trilogy. It partly reflects the fact that much less was known about this planet back then and partly that it is a work of sheer imagination, perhaps wish fulfillment fantasy. It contains Cummings' sense of wonder and love of the exotic. When he sends you to an alien planet it is exactly that. To me the strongest point about this story is its thoroughgoing realization. It has characters I really care about, you get into their minds and live among these strange people and their ways. Unlike much contemporary fiction, it has a good moral compass.
The people of mercury, desiring more living space, led by Tao, who recruited many followers sent a spaceship to Earth as a trial balloon to test their weapons against our technology. The oldest daughter of one of Mercury;s aristocratic families decides to go to Earth to warn us of the impending danger. Miela meets Alan, son of the Harvard observatory staff. They become deeply involved in the fight to save the Earth from this foreign invasion and Mercury from Tao's tyrannical dictatorship. This is a great action adventure novel!
I couldn't find the copyright date on this one, but imagine it was written a long time ago. It was a nice story, if a little inconceivable.
love reading and find books like this to be great to read. it is great to know that a person can get good books to read. Thanks for the story.
This is an amazing adventure. The characters are enchanting and the villains are despicable. It is fast paced and fun
The story was excellent science-fictipn. I liked it. I do not anymore. I do not have enough words for a review.
When you suspend belief and just read, this is an enjoyable story. With an easy way to travel to Mars utilized, an intergalactic war is averted and friendships made.
An interesting tale set on the near planet of Mercury. Not only does it explain why the same side face the sun, but how life has evolved there. It's set in the forties so some of the expressions don't mean the same as they do today. An altogether exciting story of intreague, war and love.
